LO 1:treatment
THE BRIEF
For Unit 41 we have been asked to make a short film between
5 – 10 min. We can’t make the short film in the same genre of the trailer we
made last year for unit 46.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Gender = Male
Age = 16 – 35
Social grade = A, B, C1
interests = people who will like this film will have an interest other short film with twists and ambiguous endings, they may also like books, games and feature films.
Audience profile
John is an 24 year old male who works as in Topman as a floor assistant. He likes going to seeing the newest films and playing the newest games with friends. He drives a golf and has been driving since he was 17.

SEGMENT SYNOPSIS AND HOW IT RELATES TO THE BRIEF
The short film that I will be making is about a man named Samuel
who running away from an unknown enemy. He and his group end up in abandoned building
and one by one get killed off and as each of the group gets killed Samuel changes.
This fits with the brief as the film will be no more than 10 min and it is very
different to the trailer in unit 46.

ALTER

FADE IN
EXT. DERELICT FACTORY AREA – DAY
CLOSE UP tracking shot of SAMUEL’s face while he runs; 18 year old man wearing rugged T-shirt and combat trousers, apocalyptic setting. SAMUEL appears confused.
SILENT, Sound rushes in from 4 other people who run behind SAMUEL shouting and alerting. Action genre Soundtrack.
EMPATHY wears running attire, labelled DARPA on his T-shirt.
EMPATHY
Get Inside!
SAMUEL looks around, realising the situation and remembers where he is, escaping from an unknown threat.
FEAR makes it to the building first and dives round a corner, the rest follow, SAMUEL tailing the group.
ANGER is dressed in labour working clothes.
ANGER
For fuck’s sake Samuel, get in!
EMPATHY waits at the door for SAMUEL to get in.
INT. FACTORY – DAY
PULL FOCUS on door closing as SAMUEL just gets inside. SOUND of monster screaming and trying to bash the door down. GREED and EMPATHY hold the door back, until the monster stops screaming. The door is barricaded.
FEAR worked as a teacher and is wearing a ragged shirt, penholder and trousers.
FEAR
We’re all going to die!
GREED used to be a wealthy businessman; he wears a ragged suit and tie. Speaks with a southerner London accent.
GREED
(Muttering)
Huh, Well I’m not.
SAMUEL
Christ, that was too close.
OVER SHOULDER shot of ANGER, paces angrily towards GREED.
ANGER
What the fuck was that? Why would you try to break into that car, you fucking moron!
GREED turns to ANGER, snarling.
GREED
There were supplies in the back, how was I supposed to know that the car alarm was still working. If you hadn’t noticed, we’re in the middle of a facking apocalypse!
EMPATHY
Yeah, and what were they?
FEAR
(Timidly)
You almost got us killed!
GREED
Some alcohol, we could have used for disinfection.
FEAR
More like so you can get pissed.
SAMUEL
Guys, shut up!
ANGER throws an object at the door in disgust.
ANGER
Yeah, we might as well just let that bastard in.
The Monster can be heard again screaming. The group falls silent and stares anxiously at the door.
EMPATHY
Everyone calm the fuck down.
SAMUEL
Right, let’s just set up here for the night. What have we got left?
The Group unzip their bags; they each have a backpack apart from GREED who has a rugged briefcase. They rummage around calling out quantities of supplies.
CLOSE UP on ANGER searching through his bag; he is in exasperation as if he can’t find something.
OVER THE SHOULDER shot of GREED, ANGER looks towards GREED in pure hatred.
ANGER
You took it, didn’t you?
GREED
What now? Fuck Off! Go be angry somewhere else you fucking asshole.
What now? Fuck Off! Go be angry somewhere else you fucking asshole.
ANGER
You greedy, selfish fuck.
SAMUEL
What are you doing?
SAMUEL and EMPATHY try to push ANGER from GREED; ANGER overpowers them and grabs GREED against a wall.
FEAR
Stay out of it or we’ll all get hurt
SAMUEL looks at FEAR and then forwards at the two.
The group watches the events unfold and let them fight. ANGER punches GREED. ANGER starts to throw Greed around the room and ends up throwing him out the door, which was the one thing protecting them. ANGER strangles GREED in a tense struggle. The rest of the group take their supplies and leave the safe house to witness the commotion.
GREED
AGGH!
GREED falls lifeless, for ANGER has killed him.
SAMUEL
NO!
ANGER
He needed to go.
EMPATHY
Jesus Christ.
SAMUEL
You fucking…
PULL FOCUS on ANGER staring at the group; the monsters scream interrupts Samuel.
FEAR screams.
EMPATHY
RUN!
High-paced action music resumes as the remaining group runs again. ANGER tries to get his bag from inside the room. FEAR runs off by himself.
To ANGER
EMPATHY
Leave it!
The group is tracked running round the corner as we hear ANGER screaming.
To SAMUEL
EMPATHY
Get the fuck out of here!
EMPATHY tries to rescue ANGER. SAMUEL chases in FEAR’s path. They manage to hide in a room. Monster screaming gets louder as if the monster approaches. FEAR cowers desperately; the sound climaxes, as EMPATHY stumbles round covered in blood.
FEAR GASPS
EMPATHY
He’s Dead.
EMPATHY collapses caught by SAMUEL.
SAMUEL
Fuck! What happened?
To FEAR.
SAMUEL
We need some medicine!
Choking and Spluttering. Shakes his head to SAMUEL
EMPATHY
All of it was in that bag.
SAMUEL
Dammit! What happened to the monster?
(POV Shot) FEAR peers outside looking at the room they’ve just escaped. Tearing and clawing sounds can be heard; FEAR cowers in horror
EMPATHY
It’s guarding the bag.
SAMUEL
(Sighing) Of course it is.
SAMUEL looks at FEAR as he speaks.
FEAR
What can we do?
SAMUEL looks in horror at EMPATHY
EMPATHY
Nothing. Leave me.
SAMUEL
No, No!
FEAR
Good idea.
FEAR checks outside to make sure it’s clear, before making a break for the factory’s exit.
SAMUEL
What the fuck? (Shouting) You fucking coward!
EMPATHY groans in pain
EMPATHY
This… wasn’t… part of the plan.
SAMUEL looks confused
SAMUEL
What are you on about?!
EMPATHY gasps in his last breath
EMPATHY
Make sure he dies…
EMPATHY’s life escapes from him as he dies in SAMUEL’s arms.
SAMUEL
(crying) No, No, No!
SAMUEL puts his hands on his face; wiping them from him. He changes from upset to emotionless from doing so. SAMUEL gets up leaving EMPATHY to flop on the ground; as if he has lost all affection for his friend. Camera remains on EMPATHY’s face as SAMUEL leaves, walking out into the courtyard.
SAMUEL
I’ve got to get out of here.
Close up on SAMUEL’s face. Monster scream can be heard from behind. Pure terror washes over him. He begins to run for the exit. Action music continues; camera tracks SAMUEL running from different angles [shaky].
More screams can be heard implying more than one creature has joined the chase. SAMUEL turns the corner to see FEAR has fallen and his clinging on to the edge of a lift shaft for his life.
FEAR
Help me!
SAMUEL reaches to grab his hand while in slow motion, FEAR desperately trying to grab it. At the last second SAMUEL retracts his hand, instead putting his foot on FEAR’s hand. MONSTERS screams can be heard getting louder.
FEAR
AGGH! What are you doing?
SAMUEL
This is the plan.
FEAR stares at SAMUEL with a mix of horror. confusion and pain.
FEAR
Wha-?
SAMUEL kicks his hand off, close up of his hand losing its grip. Low angle shot from inside lift shaft, SAMUEL peers down with complete remorselessness. The monsters screams get ever louder. SAMUEL turns to face his fate. Close up zooms on his face as he shuts his eyes. SOUND dissipates. We hear beeping and quiet background sound. Zooming out, the scene transitions to him lying on a bed in a hospital room. Muffled voices can be heard.
(Muffled)
NURSE
Samuel?
The sound returns to normal.
NURSE
Samuel, can you hear me? The psychological alteration procedure was a success.
High pitched tone and close up on SAMUEL appearing confused. A doctor walks into the room, his voice emerges:
DOCTOR
We have a problem. We believe there were unpredicted complications. He’s showing almost no response to our empathetic tests. I believe he has lost his morality.
SAMUEL looks around completely dumbfounded
To DOCTOR
NURSE
(Flustered) We can’t wait any longer; we’ll have to start now.
To NURSE
DOCTOR
His instability may be perfect
They both stare at SAMUEL with pleased smiles. The final shot is of the Doctor’s clipboard, labelled DARPA, Super Soldier Program. FADES to black.
These are the copies of the script given to each actor. Our main filming day will take place on Monday the 27th of April 2015.
